There seem to be some challenges with searching (also related: READ THIS BEFORE POSTING - "Searching for Answers" - although I you guys have been great about answering anyway).

I tried searching for '1.6' and '1.6.0' (knowing I'd seen a thread on it) and got no hits.  I also tried going into the individual forums and using the same search and still got no hits.  Tried the Advanced search and again no hits. ...About this time, I started to wonder if old age was setting in faster than I'd expected:-)  So, I started hunting around aimlessly and sure enough, I wasn't crazy - there in the "General Area" was:

EntitySpaces 1.6 Early Adopters

So, I tried searching for "EntitySpaces 1.6" and got 238 hits.  Then I searched for just "EntitySpaces" and also got 238 (looks like the same hits).  After some more experimenting, it looks like:

• Numbers are ignored completely
• Quotes are ignored - you can't search for phrases
• Searches are AND not OR - so a search for 'MyGeneration' (no ' ) results in 79 hits, a search for 'Vista' results in 17, a search for either 'MyGeneration Vista' or '"MyGeneration Vista"' (with " quotes) results in 9.

Hmmm, let us check the configuration options and see whats up with that, we're kind of new to Communty Server so could be.

I can't find anything myself. I searched on "Return value primary key" and got  0 hits in the Peer to Peer forum then "Value Primary Key" and got 0 hits and finally just "Primary Key" and it got about 7 hits with neither of those values in the title or the summary. I checked the advanced options and you can't search on titles and if I don't select any advanced search options my 7 hits go to zero, I would assume it would return the same 7.

 I just don't want to post a lot of questions if they are going to be repetitve and people ignore answering them because they assume I did not search the forum.

I, too, have noticed all the issues mentioned. In Advanced search, if you hover over the '?', it says you can use 'AND' and 'OR', but I have never gotten OR to work. Also, it searches for whole words, so if you search for 'join', it will not include posts with 'joined' or 'joins'. Common wild card characters seem to have no effect. I guess CS is reserving all the good stuff for their high-end Enterprise Search module.

Fortunately, their SEO support is good, and the forums are indexed by Google. I couldn't survive without the "Search this Site" button on the Google toolbar. Searching for '1.6*' turned up 185 hits on community.entityspaces.net. Even more important is google's superior relevance ranking. "EntitySpaces 1.6 Early Adopters" was the second item on the first page of results.

Hi

I haven't used Community Server so don't really know much about it but is it possible to create custom mods for it so that you could add the Google search functionality to the site? I only ask as, although I do have the (fantastically useful) Google bar installed on my home PC, I don't at work and I'm sure many others in a corporate environment may not either (plus corporates generally lock down the ability to install such things).

Just an idea - maybe someone has already produced something like this anyway?

Martin, Scott mentioned adding a Custom Google search to our site when we discussed this at Thursday's team meeting, and is investigating it. So, that is a future possibility.

PAPutzback, using the Google Toolbar when searching the MSDN site is worth trying, too. BTW, I really like your signature.
