    Shared Hosting Environments

    Hi folks,

I've messed around with a trial version a bit, and I really love what you've got and am strongly considering a purchase for my company.  I just had a quick question.  I would like to use EntitySpaces in conjunction with VistaDB to develop ASP.Net websites that will be installed in Shared Hosting environments.  I have read in numerous places on the VistaDB boards that this is supported by their product, and that this was one of the things that made it an attractive alternative to SQL Server Express.  I was wondering if Shared Hosting is supported by EntitySpaces.  Can EntitySpaces be installed with a simple x-copy, FTP deployment, or does it require an full installation to register DLLs or other assemblies with the operating system?  Will it work in a Shared Hosting environment?

I had hoped to try this out with my trial copy, but I made the mistake of switching to the release version of VistaDB, and I can't get my EntitySpaces trial to function with it.  I've waited awhile incase there was an update to the trial posted, but I was also unsure if the trial version would accurately replicate what I'm looking to test (installing in a Shared Hosting environment).

Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks for your help,

    Jeff

    Re: Shared Hosting Environments

We are waiting for the VistaDB team to finalize a few issues before we add the provider to our EntitySpaces 2007 beta line. I also wanted to add a note on shared hosting. Assuming you are not running in medium trust any version of EntitySpaces will run fine by simply copying the assemblies to the bin folder. In one of our next betas we will also offer options to allow EntitySpaces to run under medium trust but neither of these are in the current beta. Hope that helps.

    Re: Shared Hosting Environments

Also, I might throw in that we are running EntitySpaces now in a shared hosting environment, we host on www.discountasp.net and you can see our ASPX demo and our DNN samples all running. There really are no issues with EntitySpaces and shared hosting unless they enforce medium trust, and that is something we are working on for EntitySpaces 2007.

    Re: Shared Hosting Environments

I see.  I hadn't thought of the medium trust issues.  I could certainly see how that would affect things.  You guys are probably making heavy use of reflection.

Many of the hosts I am currently using do not indicate their trust level settings, but they are probably running medium as this is what Microsoft has recommended for shared hosting environments.  Medium trust support for the 2007 version would be a great feature to have.

Do you think that feature will make it into the new version within the next couple of months?

    Re: Shared Hosting Environments

Thankfully medium trust support is promised for ES v1.6 (or ES 2007 as it's now known). All of my sites are hosted in medium trust environments, so this addition was key in my decision to purchase ES.
