Re: Feedback Thread - ASP.NET Code Generator

"We are going to be publishing the source code for one of our data providers as an example. This will allow 3rd party's to create data providers for database systems not currently supported by EntitySpaces"

This is a great news, hope you'll do it before 2008 so i could use entityspaces with Postgre ;)

"Finally, you could even host this new code generation system on a server on your network and all of your development team could access it there"

That is a second great news, cause it was very difficult to share the meta information of the table (contained in mygeneration) with all the developpers.

    Good ideas ;)

Well, the good news is that we are going to implement PostgreSQL, don't have a date, but I want to keep this thread focused on the ASP.NET Generator for now. I'm glad you like the idea(s) ...

Re: Feedback Thread - ASP.NET Code Generator

Sounds cool Mike - especially being able to have intellisense and debugging while writing templates - that will make the process a whole lot easier.

Oh, and if you're after suggestions for a name, how about Clasp (def: used to hold two or more objects or parts together) Smile

And the usual question, of course, how soon?! (You knew it would be asked sooner or later so I thought I'd do the honours!)

    Cheers

    Martin

It sounds great. Better is impossible.

Re: Feedback Thread - ASP.NET Code Generator

Yes for ASP .NET Code Generators!

I love entityspaces, but don't care much for MyGeneration. Please use ASP .NET AJAX for the web UI if you can, and a way to save all user's configuration settings, not just the connection string.

    Thank you!

Re: Feedback Thread - ASP.NET Code Generator

Sounds like a great idea. I was wondering if this system would be able to generate asp pages or user controls also. While my data layer has become painless thanks to EntitySpaces, I still find myself copying and pasting a lot of code for the UI (such as validators, ajax stuff, etc). Most asp pages I work on are pretty simple and have a uniform layout and could probably be generated as well.

Also, what does the template look like in design mode? While I wouldn’t personally create a template visually, it may bring wider community participation.

Re: Feedback Thread - ASP.NET Code Generator

driath, yes, absolutely, writing templates would be the same as writing aspx pages, so you will know how to write templates right out of the box. That's one of the major reasons behind our wanting to use this new approach, you could easy copy/paste a working aspx/ascx page into a template (which is now just another aspx page) and template-tize it, which is merely just replacing hard coded stuff with the meta data (column names, types, ect ,,,) from your database. You will become extremely productive, that is why we are going to open up a template sharing area here on EntitySpaces.

Re: Feedback Thread - ASP.NET Code Generator

This does indeed sound great.  I recently finished building a template for Windows forms using MyGeneration and was just getting ready to move on to building a Web form version as well.  Intellisense and using standard .ASPX files for the templates will make it extremely fast to get something up and running. Sounds good.

Don't forget to include Projects to make rebuilding even easier as in MyGen

Re: Feedback Thread - ASP.NET Code Generator

I think this is a great idea. I especially like the idea of debugging via VS and ASP.NET.

    Slick.

I've always admired MyGen for what it can do, but I've never been too fond of the interface and its usability. This sounds like a great way to leverage what we've already got in VS
